Early career years (1984-2000)

Dr. Thirumalai Ganesan graduated from Madras Medical College in 1984 and completed his general surgical training in 1990 and urological training in 1993. He worked as an Assistant Professor at Stanley Medical College and Govt. Stanley Hospital till 1995. He then left for England for higher urological training. After acquiring  FRCS (General Surgery), 1996 from the Royal College of Glasgow, Scotland, he was trained at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne in Endo-urology and Uro-oncology from 1996 to 2000. He went on to obtain an FRCS in Urology in 2000.

Dr Ganesan worked as a Consultant Urologist and lead clinician for Uro-oncology at Manchester Royal Infirmary, a 2000 bedded teaching Hospital, at Manchester, England from 2000 to 2002. He then returned to India and joined as a Consultant at Apollo Hospitals in 2003. During the same year he went for preceptorship in Laparoscopic urology in prestigious institutions in the United States of America, like Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore), Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital (New York), Cleveland Hospital (Ohio) and Indianapolis University Hospital (Indianapolis).

Later years (2002-Current)

He went to England in 2004 for a Fellowship in Laparoscopic Urology at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. He has presented papers in British Association of Urological Surgeons annual meeting at Harrogate and Glasgow, UK. He has also published papers in the British Journal of Urology and Australian and New Zealand Journals of Surgery.

In Apollo Hospitals, Dr Ganesan pioneered minimally invasive urology with procedures like Per-cutaneous nephrolithotomy for kidney stones (keyhole surgery), Flexible ureteroscopy and Laparoscopic nephrectomy in Chennai. He was the first to perform keyhole surgery for Prostate cancer in Tamil Nadu. In 2011, he further enhanced his skills by visiting Indianapolis and Celebration Bloom at Orlando, United States for Advanced Robotic training. He completed his Robotic Surgical Stimulator (RoSS) training at Rosewell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, New York.

The National Board of Examinations appointed Dr Ganesan in 2005 as one of the inspectors for Training at the national level. He inspected various centres across the country to certify the level of urological training given to the trainees. He has also been inducted as the examiner for the National board and is in the examiner panel.


At present, he is working as a Senior Consultant, Dept. of Urology at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai. His areas of interest include minimally invasive urology (Endourology, Laparoscopic and Robotic Urology) in Stone disease and Urological cancers.
